Billy Gene Smith, lovingly known as Bill, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2025, in Lowell, Arkansas, at the age of 86. Born in Benton, Arkansas, on February 8, 1939, Bill lived a full and meaningful life marked by integrity, dedication, and a deep love for his family and community.

Bill graduated from Harmony Grove High School, where he proudly played on the basketball team, forming friendships and memories that stayed with him throughout his life. He went on to earn a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Arkansas, graduating in 1963—an accomplishment that shaped the foundation of a long and impactful career.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Patricia Smith; his children, Kevin Smith, Tamara Johnston, Kyle Smith along with wife Tisha Smith and granddaughter Gemma Smith; his cherished grandchildren, Lauren Woodworth along with husband Matt Woodworth and great granddaughter Arabella Woodworth, Blake Johnston and Fiancé Rachel Wise, Parker Johnston and wife Malaysia Johnston.

Bill spent much of his professional life serving others through his work as a civil engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). After retirement, he founded his own firm, EMB: Engineer, Management, and Budgeting, where he continued to share his expertise as a consultant and contractor.

Outside of his career, Bill was a man of many talents and interests. He loved fishing, inventing, writing, and developing computer programs. He found great joy in coaching sports, both on land and in the water, and especially in building and creating things for his children and grandchildren. One of his favorite daily rituals was joining his friends at his local coffee club—sharing stories, laughter, and connection. Bill also spent time writing his life story, a testament to his thoughtful nature and rich experiences.

He will be remembered most for his loyalty, kindness, and generosity. A strong and compassionate protector, Bill lived by his faith and found joy in meeting new people—he truly never met a stranger. His warmth, wisdom, and unwavering love will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Visitation will be 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. Monday, September 8 at Ashby Funeral Home, 108 W. Narroway St., Benton, Arkansas with a celebration of Bill's life beginning at 1:00 p.m.  Burial will follow at Graham Cemetery.
