Doris Joan Styles, 84, of Austin, Texas, went home to be with her Lord on Monday, August 10, 2026. Born on July 30, 1942, in Little Rock, Arkansas, Joan was the beloved daughter of Lowell and Dorothy Miller.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Styles; her granddaughter, Bethany Shockey; and her brother, Phillip Miller.

Joan is survived by her four children, each of whom she cherished deeply: Dana Shockey (Jeff) of Willis, Texas; Sherri Stephens (Kirk) of Tomball, Texas; Tamara Styles (Mario) of Austin, Texas; and Brad Styles (Courtney) of Austin, Texas. She is also survived by her brother, Jerry Miller (Linda) of Searcy, Arkansas.

Her greatest earthly joy was her family. She was blessed with seven grandchildren - Chad Stephens (Ashley), Nicole Cruz (Andy), Victoria Sweetland (Nick), Reid Shockey (Ashley), Raven Alfaro, Ryan Resendez, and Aliyah Styles - and eight great-grandchildren: Jaycob Gassnola, Jaxon Cruz, Leila Graef, Josiah Vasquez, Emery Stephens, Harper Shockey, Hudson Shockey, and Stetson Sweetland.

Joan was a devoted member of Woodlawn Baptist Church in Austin, where she worshiped and served faithfully for many years. She gave her life to the Lord at a young age, and her walk with Christ shaped every part of who she was. Music was one of her greatest expressions of faith - she loved singing hymns, participating in choir, and playing the piano. In her early years, she played for church services as her father led the music and her mother sang in the choir, a family legacy that nurtured her deep love for worship.

Her faith was steady and sincere. Joan was a prayer warrior, a faithful participant in Ladies Bible Study groups and retreats, and a constant source of encouragement to those around her. Choir ministry brought her tremendous joy, especially when sharing choral programs with the poor and homeless in the community. Even in her final years, when her health declined, she found comfort in the hymns she had sung throughout her life - songs that reminded her of God's promises and filled her heart with peace. She truly lived out Psalm 100:1, making a joyful noise unto the Lord.

Professionally, Joan was gifted in the financial field. She worked for many years as a bookkeeper in Little Rock before moving into tax preparation in Austin, eventually retiring from Figer & Company. She was known for her strong work ethic, loyalty, and dedication to those she served.

As a wife, mother, and grandmother, Joan was the heart of her family. She loved deeply, encouraged generously, and supported each family member through every season of life. Her guidance was rooted in prayer and her unwavering faith in God. The legacy she leaves behind is seen clearly in the lives of her children and grandchildren - each one touched by her kindness, wisdom, and steadfast love.

Joan will be profoundly missed by her family and friends, yet we rejoice knowing she is now more alive than ever in the presence of her Lord. We hold tightly to the promise that "to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord" (2 Corinthians 5). Joan is home.

A memorial service celebrating Joan's life was held on Saturday morning, August 15th, at Woodlawn Baptist Church, 4600 Menchaca Rd., Austin, Texas. Visitation began at 10:00 a.m., followed by the service at 11:00 a.m., led by her pastor, Bro. Russell Allen, and her brother, Jerry Miller.

Graveside services will be Wednesday, August 19th, at 10:30 a.m. at McPherson Cemetery in Sardis, Arkansas.
