Dorothy Ann Smith, age 87, of Alexander, passed away Friday, April 4, 2025.  She was born July 31, 1937 in Mamre, Minnesota.  Dorothy was a wonderful mother, grandmother, friend and had a servant's heart.  She served 40 years at Saline Memorial Hospital as an L.P.N. having worked in every department.  Her greatest joy was working in the nursery.  She was a long time member of Salem Missionary Baptist Church and then moved her membership to Avilla Missionary Baptist Church.  Stories have been handed down throughout the years that as a child you would find mom taking care of her father, brothers and farm animals. This carried on through her whole life as she continued to care for her family, patients and pets.

She is preceded in death by her parents, James M. Hawkland & Mary Hansen Hawkland; husband, Thomas R. Smith; three brothers, twin Donald, Butch, and Jimmy; and three sisters, Mary Jean, Maxine, and Helen.

Dorothy is survived by four children, Keith Cole (Barbara), Patty Bryan (Mark), Kristi Cole, and granddaughter/daughter Crystal Rickard (Jonathan); six grandchildren, Tomye Redden, Michelle Phelps, Cody Burkett, Micah Witham, Matthew Witham, and Joni Barker; twenty-four great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces & nephews.

Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, April 11 at Ashby Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 12 at Ashby Funeral Home with burial at Forest Hills Cemetery.  Bro. Kirby Caple will be officiating.
