Obituary

Larry James Drennan, 70, of Benton, passed away Tuesday, October 27, 2026. Born December 18, 1955, was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and a man whose humor, honesty, and unmistakable personality left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Larry loved the outdoors. As a young man, he played baseball and was an excellent pitcher. He also played football at Bryant High School. Throughout his life, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and racing. In his later years, one of his favorite pastimes was attending classic car shows with his family. Larry and some other family members owned classic trucks, and Larry proudly won multiple trophies for his black 1949 Chevrolet 3100.

As much as Larry enjoyed sports, the outdoors, racing, and classic vehicles, nothing meant more to him than his wife, Loretta. They shared 43 wonderful years together, filled with love and unforgettable memories. Larry always kissed her goodnight and never let the night end without telling her that he loved her.

Family was everything to Larry. He was honest and direct, and he always said exactly what was on his mind - no one ever had to wonder what he was thinking. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a gift for knowing the perfect moment to offer a joke or smart remark. Larry was old-school tough, stubborn as a mule, and deeply loyal to the people he loved.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Allen and Lucille Drennan, and his brother, Billy Gardner.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Loretta Drennan; his sisters, Jane Drennan and Linda Phillips; his brothers, Carl Buck and Jimmy Edwards; his daughters, Stacy James, Mandy Scruggs, Crystal Drennan; his son, Ricky Thornberry; his grandchildren, Morgan Mayberry, Martin Craddock, Gavin Thornberry, Hayden, Gunnar, Cameron, Kynley; and his great-grandchildren, Blakely and Emerson.

Larry will be remembered for his toughness, quick wit, love of family, passion for the outdoors and classic vehicles, and the steadfast love he shared with Loretta. His stories, jokes, and memories will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Visitation will be 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 3 at Ashby Funeral Home.
